Background

Studying is one of the most common out-of-school activities shared by the Stuyvesant community, and creating and using study guides is a common approach to studying. Although study guides are very useful, many students do not use or create study guides due to various reasons, such as extracurricular activities or hours worth of homework. With this in mind, we want to help the sophomore class by continuing and improving the study guide policy of the previous sophomore caucus.

Research

The proposal of this policy is not new, as stated above, but, in accordance with our progression arch, it is rather an expansion and continuation of the Class of 2022’s Sophomore Caucus study guide policy. It is very realistic that this policy can be easily implemented and will be highly beneficial to the student body. The previous sophomore caucus acquired upperclassmen study guides by providing submitters with a chance to win a Chipotle Gift card.

Benefits

As mentioned above, many students struggle to study for various reasons, and so it is important to have readily available resources to assist students in studying. The study guides would help students raise their test scores and grades while helping to lessen their workloads, and overall, benefit the student body. These study guides will be especially important this school year, as many students struggle with online learning and may not have the best understanding of certain topics. The study guides will help these students to review and supplement their courses during the year. In addition to this, the study guides policy will help promote inter-grade relations. We plan to work with the upperclassmen in securing study guides for us, as well as with the freshman caucus to provide study guides for the freshmen.

Implementation

To acquire study guides to share with the sophomore class, we plan on asking upperclassmen for their study guides in return for a chance to enter a raffle for a gift card prize. In addition, we plan on working with the freshman caucus to give freshman study guides from sophomores. Although there are many different approaches to releasing new study guides, we have decided that posting our acquired study guides on our website would be the best option, similar to how the previous sophomore caucus did, with them being organized by subject as well as providing the name of the submitter and the teacher they had. When adding new study guides to our website, we will announce them through our newsletter and link the webpage to ensure maximum accessibility.

Challenges

While the concept of a study guides policy is not new, and has proven to be successful, there are still challenges associated with its implementation. The main challenge being obtaining these study guides from our upperclassmen, as we cannot ask the rising sophomores, who haven’t taken the classes yet, for their study sheets. It is also important that every sophomore can easily find and access these resources.

Solutions

To obtain the study guides from upperclassmen, we plan to provide an incentive, just as the previous sophomore caucus did. More specifically, we plan on counting each study guide submitted as an entry into a raffle to win a gift card of their choice from one of many chains.  Secondly, to make sure that students can easily access the study guides, we will post them on our website and announce when new ones are available.
