Speaker Series

The Speaker Series is a series of speeches hosted by the Student Union and the caucuses where different speakers are invited to speak about their life stories and professional experience. We plan on continuing this series of speakers as they have shown great turnouts and allow students to have a chance to expand their knowledge about the world by listening to the amazing stories the speakers have to tell. Although quarantine makes in-school sessions impossible, we plan on having digital speakers, and once quarantine ends, we will host in-person sessions. However, one thing we do want to change, as Sophomore Caucus, is hosting virtual Speaker Series events even when we’re back in school. The main benefit of this change is that we will be able to invite more speakers since complications such as travel expenses and logistical problems such as theater space are gone.

More Merchandise

This proposal is very straight forward. We’ve researched many wholesalers for merchandise and we believe that we should provide students with a higher variety of merchandise than what is currently available at the Stuyvesant store. Increasing the variety of merch available would not only allow students to show support for their school in more ways but also add a source of revenue for the SU, which will then be invested back into the student body. We asked around and determined that the most wanted Stuyvesant merchandise are laptop stickers, wristbands, adhesive cardholders, and pop sockets. We plan on letting sophomores pre-order from an array of merchandise using Square and Google Forms to test out how effective this would be in terms of fundraising. For the students that pre-order, we plan to give them the option to wait until we get back to school to receive their merchandise or, for a premium, ship them to their homes.

Suggestion Form

Although this policy has been proposed year after year, it is too important to neglect, especially during these times. We believe that we should be obtaining student feedback at every step of the decision-making process and in everything we do. Therefore, we plan to incorporate a feedback form into our caucus. The feedback form will always be available via our social media and website. The feedback and questions that we receive will be answered and addressed in our newsletter and open caucus meetings. Unfortunately, students will have to sign in with their Stuyvesant email to prevent “trolls” from sending joke responses. However, to keep the forms anonymous, the only people who are able to access who is sending the responses will be an unbiased source, probably either Julian or Mr. Polazzo.

Student Resources

One major challenge that any caucus faces is increasing trust between themselves and the student body. This policy aims to add to our goal of transparency by making more resources accessible to help students. One major example is the PDF forms of textbooks on the Stuy SU website. With remote learning, since teachers will be sending textbooks to their classes anyway, we want to add these textbooks onto the Stuy SU website in order to decrease student hassle, whether this year or in the future. Some more resources that we plan to highlight and improve are the study guides on StuyArista (which we plan to add to throughout study guides policy) and StuyVantage (which we plan to use to contact local businesses).

Inter-Caucus/SU Relations

Inter-Caucus and SU Relations refer to smooth communication between all sections of the Student Union, as well as working together to do more than any one section could. One good example of this is how traditionally, the sophomore caucus works with the freshman caucus to host a Soph-Frosh formal. If we can manage to return to school for the fall semester, we plan to try to host this as we obviously did not get a formal last year. A number of larger projects we proposed (e.g. our Rainy Days Policy and the Coming In Early Policy) are not policies that a single caucus can implement. So that is why we plan on collaborating with other caucuses and the SU to achieve our goals of implementing these ambitious policies.
